The virtual reality (VR) landscape has seen significant shifts in market share during the third quarter of 2024, with Meta maintaining its strong lead and Apple solidifying its position as a key player. According to recent market analysis reports, Meta has captured the lion's share of the VR headset market, while Apple has emerged as a strong contender in second place. Check out all details here.

AR/VR headset
Meta maintained its leading position in the global virtual reality (VR) market, holding a 65 percent market share in Q3 2024, while Apple’s Vision Pro shipments doubled (quarter-on-quarter) after its international launch in China, Europe, and APAC, as stated in a recent report. In total, worldwide VR headset shipments decreased by 4 percent year-over-year and 16 percent quarter-over-quarter in Q3 2024, marking the third consecutive quarter of declines in the market, as reported by Counterpoint’s Global XR (AR/VR) Headset Model Tracker.

The decline was mainly attributed to a 50 percent fall in the tethered VR headset category during the quarter. In comparison, the independent VR headset segment increased by 14 percent year over year.

Counterpoint anticipates that international sales will represent almost 90 percent of Apple's overall shipments in the second half of 2024.

"Apple is said to be evaluating OLED screens built on traditional glass substrates for its more affordable Vision headset." The report stated that this display technology is probably more economical than the Micro OLED displays utilized in the Vision Pro.

Pico’s deliveries fell by 2 percent year-over-year but increased by 6 percent quarter-over-quarter. Sony's shipments declined by 29 percent year-over-year but increased more than twofold quarter-over-quarter, driven by the launch of its PC adapter and marketing efforts in North America and Europe.

Although the XR market showed weak performance in Q3 2024, the time saw crucial advancements in the industry.

The report indicated that the launch of Meta’s Orion AR glasses and Snap’s Spectacles 24 AR glasses highlighted the future possibilities of AR technologies.

Utilizing progress in generative AI technologies, conventional hardware leaders, AR/VR manufacturers, and online firms are redirecting their attention towards creating AR+AI smart glasses.

"Although the worldwide VR market is expected to experience only minimal growth in the next few years, Counterpoint anticipates considerable development in the global AR smart glasses sector, as noted by the roper."
